It was the ORC’s reputation that gave me the incentive to apply there for my PhD. It is so well-known and there are applicants from every corner of the world. I got a position in the Optical Fibre Communications Group and I was extremely happy with my choice.
I would thoroughly recommend the University of Southampton as an excellent place to study. You have access to first class facilities and it is also great for student life with a thriving social scene.
My research explored soft glass optical fibres: a new class of fibres being used to realise ultrafast telecom devices. As well as contributing to the latest development in fibre technology, my PhD gave me an invaluable opportunity to work with many different cultures from all over the world.
Since finishing my PhD I have been working as a development engineer in SPI Lasers where I get to combine the technical knowledge I acquired at Southampton, with expanding my experience by coming into contact with the manufacturing world.
