In celebration of International Women's Day, the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) hosted an inspiring talk by renowned physicist and advocate for gender equality in STEM, Jess Wade. The event was introduced by ORC Director Graham Reed and Deputy Director Anna Peacock, who highlighted Wade's impressive contributions to science and public engagement.
Jess Wade captivated the audience with a discussion on her career journey, her research on chirality, and her interests outside the lab. Wade's dedication to increasing gender equality in STEM was evident as she shared her remarkable achievement of writing over 2,100 biographies on Wikipedia, showcasing notable female role models from minority backgrounds.
Wade also addressed the lack of storybooks about science and technology, which motivated her to write and publish two children's books, "Nano" and "Light." Her passion and enthusiasm for her work were palpable, engaging the audience and sparking a lively Q&A session at the end of her talk.
