"PHOTONIC NANOBIOSENSORS FOR LAB-ON-A-CHIP APPLICATIONS"

Speaker biography: Professor Laura Lechuga

Prof. Laura M. Lechuga, PhD in Chemistry at the University Complutense of Madrid (1992). She is a Research Staff member (Full Professor) of the Spanish National Research Council. From 1995 to 2007 she was the Head of the Biosensors Group at the Microelectronics National Center (CSIC) in Madrid, Spain. Since January 2008, she is the Head of the Nanobiosensors and Molecular Nanobiophysics Group at the Research Center on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CIN2), CSIC in Barcelona, Spain.

Her main research areas are the technological development of biosensors based on plasmonics, magnetoplasmonics, integrated photonics and nanomechanics principles, surface biofunctionalization and microfluidics integration. The biosensing platforms are applied in the environmental control of pollutants, early diagnosis of cancer and diseases and genomics and proteomics. Her Group has pioneering developments in photonics biosensors at international level as the integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the magnetoplasmonic sensor or the optical microcantilever device.

Dr. Lechuga has published more than 100 articles and book chapters and has 7 patents. She was the Coordinator of one of the most successful EU projects from IST-5Framework Programme. Dr. Lechuga has pioneered the creation of a spin-off company (SENSIA, SL, www.sensia.es) and one product based on the Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor is already on the market.
