Double fellowship awards for ORC researchers

Published: 23 September 2016

Two research staff from the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) have won EPSRC early career fellowship awards:

Professor Anna Peacock for her project ‘Integrated nonlinear silicon photonics: a route to smaller, faster, greener systems’ and Dr Ben Mills for his project ‘Beam-shaping for Laser-based Additive and Subtractive-manufacturing Techniques (BLAST)’. He said, “I'm really excited to have been awarded an EPSRC Early Career Fellowship for the development of novel beam-shaping techniques for high-precision laser-based manufacturing.â€?

Professor Sir David Payne, ORC Director said, “EPSRC fellowships are very competitive, prestigious and well-funded. To secure two in the same round in unprecedented. Our congratulations to Ben and Anna, they are star researchers who can rightly feel proud of themselves.â€?

EPSRC Fellowships are awarded to aspiring and world-leading individuals who are delivering the highest quality research to meet UK and global priorities. They provide greater support through links to the EPSRC’s strategic priorities. Fellowships develop the next generation of researchers with the greatest potential across the postdoctoral, early and established career stages.

Professor Anna Peacock said, “I am very pleased to have been awarded this EPSRC fellowship. It will enable me to investigate innovative ways to integrate both fibre and chip-based silicon photonic systems.â€?

Ben and Anna especially appreciated the support provided by Faculty, in particular Associate Dean Research, Professor Rob Eason, and Research and Innovation Services team throughout the whole process: from funder-panel insights, proposal reading and feedback to organising mock interviews and support.
