The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) celebrated a double milestone on 16 July 2024, the 35th anniversary of the ORC and 28 years of leadership under Sir David Payne. The celebration event took place at the Turner Sims Concert Hall, which hosted key figures from the fields of science and technology. These included Dr Vint Cerf, widely recognised as one of “the fathers of the internet,” Professor Polina Bayvel (Head of the Optical Networks Group at University College London (UCL)), Professor Graham Reed, ORC Director and a leading figure in the field of silicon photonics. Other contributors included, Dr Steve Norman, Professor David Richardson and Dr KV Reddy.

The day began with keynote speeches that reflected on the ORC’s noteworthy achievements over the past 35 years and its central role in advancing optoelectronics. Prof. Graham Reed welcomed and thanked everyone for taking the time to celebrate with the ORC, whilst also highlighting the ORC’s significant contributions to photonics and its ongoing influence on global technology. Graham also acknowledged the extensive achievements and commitment of Sir David Payne over his 28 years of Directorship.

Following Graham Reed, Sir David Payne gave an introductory speech to the large audience. Sir David Payne, a well-known and highly regarded figure in the field of photonics, recounted the ORC’s journey from its inception to becoming a world-renowned research hub.  He also shared his own personal thoughts on nearly three decades of leadership, during which the ORC pioneered numerous breakthroughs, including the development of the erbium-doped fibre amplifier, which revolutionised optical communications.

“I am deeply honoured to have led this extraordinary centre for so many years,” said Sir David. “Our success is a testament to the brilliant minds and tireless efforts of everyone who has been part of the ORC. Together, we have pushed the boundaries of science and technology, and I am confident that the next generation will continue to lead us to new heights.”

Dr. Vint Cerf, also gave a keynote speech in which he noted Sir David Payne's key achievements, whilst emphasising the crucial role of photonics in enabling the global communications network. Dr Cerf also highlighted that the impact of the ORC’s research extends far beyond the academic world, influencing industries and shaping the future of technology.

The celebrations featured an exhibition highlighting the ORC's most iconic technological advancements. Attendees had the chance to network and explore the exhibition, which guided them through the ORC’s journey from its inception to its current accomplishments. A timeline displayed all of the ORC’s significant milestones, offering a quick overview of its achievements, which are poised to expand and evolve in the coming years.

The day concluded with a formal dinner, where colleagues, partners, and friends of the ORC gathered to toast the achievements of the past 35 years and to celebrate Sir David Payne’s outstanding tenure as Director. The evening was filled with heartfelt tributes and occasionally funny stories as many took to the podium reflecting on Sir David’s visionary leadership and his lasting impact on the field of optoelectronics.

As the ORC looks to the future, it remains committed to leading the way and pushing the boundaries of knowledge and technology. With new and existing colleagues, the ORC continues to honour its legacy of excellence, building on the strong foundation laid by Sir David Payne and his predecessors.
