The ORC welcomes Professor Nikolay Zheludev and his group

Published: 22 November 2006

The ORC is pleased to announce the arrival of Professor Nikolay Zheludev and his group to the ORC. Nikolay joined the ORC at the beginning of November when he was appointed as Deputy Director of the ORC. Nikolay was a Professor of Physics at the University of Southampton and is Senior Research Professor of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. He was awarded MSc, PhD and DSc from Moscow State University and joined Southampton University in 1991.

The ORC held a special event to welcome Nickolay and his staff to the ORC. During this event Nikolay gave a stimulating talk that provided an overview, in an international context, of the current research efforts of his group and the research agenda of the EPSRC Nanophotonics Portfolio that the group brings to the ORC.

Research in Nikolay’s group spans a wide range of topics, loosely held together by the keywords nanophotonics, metamaterials and practical genome sequencing. Artifical â€˜metamaterials’ are achieved by nano-structuring and offer a revolution in photonics by delivering new functionalities that are not available with natural materials. In addition, the control of optical and plasmonic signals on the nano-scale provides a path towards a new level of photonic miniaturization (nanoturization).
