Southampton's finest invention and its pioneer tech start-ups

Charles Elder in the University of Southampton Central Communication team was approached by journalists at The Daily Telegraph with interest in Dame Wendy Hall and Winchester School of Art but ended up with a wider story on the Southampton tech scene, including Future Worlds and the Zepler Institute / Optoelectronics Research Centre.

On Friday 9th August two of our ORC Supervisors including Professor Graham Reed and Professor David Richardson joined the ORC director, Professor Sir David Payne, in welcoming The Daily Telegraph to the University. They took a tour of the ZI/ORC cleanroom complex and saw an ideal photo opportunity.

"The city ranks in the UK's top five tech superclusters, ahead of Cambridge and Bristol, according to the latest report by estate advisers CBRE. Between 2010 and 2016, the number of hi-tech workers grew by a quarter. In 2017, Southampton's turnover for digital tech businesses was £2.1bn.

"I've often contended that the culture of the people at Southampton is determined by the fact that we tend to have a very international view of the world," says Sir David."
